In giddy anticipation of actually ~~escaping student clutches for a week~~ being able to go somewhere outside of Texas for a change, I was leafing through the “Norfolk and the Cambridge Fens” chapter of my AA Discovering Britain book. There appear to be several very bracing – and according to the book, “unspoiled” – places to visit near Cromer. “Near” by my standards; “down the street”, in fact (though Europeans may disagree vehemently).

Blakeney Point, Hickling Broad, Holkham Gap, Cley Next the Sea … the latter sounds especially intriguing, to an American! We have no such names for towns in the US, unless they’re in Native American languages that nobody understands any longer.

Yes, they’re all here and all true. I’ve experienced a sense of wilderness here in Norfolk that I’ve only ever felt in northern Kenya.

Pretty Corner, which sounds enchanting, is also mentioned in the chapter. I finally managed to obtain a copy of Oliver Rackham’s book Woodlands (after delays and cancellations that I don’t understand entirely, apart from the popularity of New Naturalist volumes among serious book collectors), and I’m looking forward to visiting some of the woods and forests described.

The fish and chips standard here is below that of even an ordinary UK chippy, unfortunately. Usually I’m so disappointed, I end up frying fish in the traditional southern US manner, with hushpuppies instead of chips.

Dunno! I don’t think there’s really a limit. The appeal of Cromer in February is bound to be somewhat selective, so at this stage the more the merrier. Over the next few days I shall scope out a decent room where we can have the meeting (I think we’d only have a single unconferential stream) and take it from there.

In due course I shall post whatever I can find about accommodation, and how to get here.
